Osteoporosis… Osteopenia… Is Calcium Alone Enough??

Blausen_0686_Osteoporosis_01Do you want to look like your Grandma?  … that’s what people say when talking about Osteoporosis (Now that I am “Grandma” … I really take offense and know that it does not have to be that way!)

“Do you take your Calcium?”  Common question asked by doctors… Answer:  “Okay… then you are taking care of your bones and you are protecting against Osteoporosis”… but are you?  Is Calcium alone enough?

Several years ago a colleague of mine and I decided to delve into the Bone Health.  To our surprise, we found it is not only Calcium, Magnesium and Vitamin D3 that are required, but also a mix of other essential minerals and fatty acids.  Also you need proper balance between Calcium and other minerals for the Calcium to be effective!  But who knew??

While calcium is the cornerstone mineral in bones, calcium consumption alone does not build bones.   In fact, calcium consumption taken alone can be detrimental to your health!!  What we found in the literature suggests that you require a whole combination of various nutrients to build bones, in various amounts or you might as well not take the calcium at all.  But before you freak out at the number of minerals, look at the sources of this minerals and realize if you eat a healthy diet of nuts and leafy greens, you are most likely getting these minerals (if not… rethink your diet for many reasons).

From that research we developed a list of the minerals we believe are required, and put together  amounts and natural sources.  Check out: https://strongtummies.com//diastasisresources/ and click on 18 Nutrients for Healthy Bones.  Remember:  We are not scientists, medical professionals, or professional researchers.  This list is certainly not exhaustive, but simply a compilation of months of research from many resources.

Strong Tummies are part of strong bodies and we need to keep our bones strong.  We can’t simply continue to think that taking a calcium supplement alone is going to prevent osteoporosis… and hope this makes you pause and look at your diet and supplements.

We are wonderfully and fearfully made… but we must make some choices along the way so we hope this helps you be better informed.
